    Viola case

Violas come in different sizes that range between 14" and 17" in body length. Not sure what that means? No worries! We'll explain in this article.

Unlike violins that come in standard sizes, violas come in a range of lengths and widths. Which makes the journey of finding a suitable case a bit more challenging.

However, we'll simplify the process down to two important measurements you must know before purchasing a case.

    Body Length & Lower Bout

The body length is the longest length of the viola's sound box (not including the button, which is right under the neck).

Body length usually ranges from 14" to 17". Most violas are between 16" to 16.5".

If you have a 14" or 17" viola, message us directly so that we can help you find the right case. Since the vast majority of viola cases cannot accommodate 14" or 17" violas.

The lower bout is the widest part of the sound box. Lower bout lengths usually range between 9" to 9.75".

If you have a viola with a lower bout that exceeds 10", consider the Tonareli oblong viola cases. These are one of the very few cases that can accommodate larger lower bouts. Also message us directly for more recommendations.

    Adjustable and Non-adjustable Viola Cases

Many viola cases are "adjustable". This means the neck cushion can slide back and forth to accommodate different body lengths. they're usually designed to fit violas between 15" and 16.5" (be sure to always check the specific viola case's product description to make sure).

Here are a few examples of adjustable viola cases. Adjustable viola cases are always more popular than non-adjustable viola cases. Since they take a lot of the guesswork out.

Here are examples of non-adjustable viola cases. Notice you have to select the exact size you want (example. 15.5", 16", 16.5"). See image below:

    Summary

Finding the right case for your viola is important, since you don't want to be stuck with a case that doesn't fit your instrument. Even though most online stores allow you to return your case, they will not cover the cost of return shipping (on top of a restocking fee).

Here at Great Violin Cases, we offer a 30-day, 100% refund guarantee (as long as the case is returned in it's original box and condition). However, like all online stores, we also do not cover the cost of return the case to us due to sizing issues.

So do your homework! Measure your viola. We're more than happy to answer any questions before you decide to order a case. You can contact us directly at info@greatviolincases.com.

Does anyone make a decent, nonadjustable 15" viola case?
