OVERVIEW:

I am going into college as a gigging musician and wanted a lightweight but protective case for my instrument. This shaped case is exactly as described - it holds my 4/4 violin beautifully, along with my two bows, rosin, mute, shoulder rest, wet sponge in a bag, and rosin cloth. If you like to store more than the basics, get the oblong case. However, this shaped case perfectly satisfies my needs!

PURCHASE CONTENTS:

SHOULDER REST:

NOTE: While the product description specifically says it will not fit a shoulder rest, my Kun Collapsible shoulder rest does fit. You can adjust where the neck rest sits in the case, and I biased it towards the side to create more room for my shoulder rest. See pictures.

ACCESSORY POUCH:

The small accessory pouch has a zipper, but the actual zipper is on the hinge side, which makes it a little awkward to open when I want something from the pouch. I’ve had great success with just leaving the pouch unzipped but its lid closed, as the case itself prevents it from opening.

VIOLIN NECK REST:

I already have an oblong Pure in grey and bought the shaped case for a 2nd violin for my daughter. I wanted the smallest/lightest, yet most protective case at a decent price since she’ll be carrying it to/from school and lessons. This fits the bill. Very protective interior with a strap to secure the neck, and the grey is a very modern, attractive color that gets compliments. It also comes with a blanket to cover the violin—I had to dig for that info across GEWA’s descriptions so I’m confirming that for others!

It’s true that there’s almost no room for any shoulder rest except a folding Kun style, but that’s the rest she has so it fits—just barely. Best if you have a tight, small bag or wrap it in a lightweight cleaning cloth to avoid rubbing against the scroll/pegs. I’m planning to add a strap to hold it down. The oblong and shaped cases are the same length, so if you need to carry anything more than the absolute minimum in your case, opt for the oblong instead, which also has 4 bow holders whereas the shaped has only 2.

The inner bag is small—enough for rosin and a tuner/metronome combo device and other small misc items. As I write this, I wonder if a factory improvement to this case might be to add the straps running between/behind the bow holders (like the Bobelock-style cases have), or add a sleeve in the lid—something that could secure spare strings flat in their envelopes.
